AT&T U-verse App For Those Who Aren't AT&T Wireless Customers

If you use AT&T U-verse at home for your cable consumption needs, you may have heard that AT&T released an Android version of their popular iPhone app which allows for controlling of your DVR functions remotely.  Unfortunately, the app has only been available to those who have AT&T for their wireless provider as well.  However, thanks to a user over at XDA-Forums, a hacked version of the app is now out in the wild for non-AT&T customers that have U-verse.  Links and screen shots after the jump.

The U-verse Android app provides many of the features of it's iPhone counterpart, including browsing the program guide, scheduling recordings, and even downloading recordings for playback on your phone (if your U-Verse plan includes that option).  However, it's missing the ability to change the channel you are currently watching on your TV, which, from what I understand, the iPhone app can do.

The app works well, and is logically laid out.  If you are trying to schedule a recording to happen several days from now, it's actually easier to do it from the app than attempting it via your remote control and set top box.  I did not run in to any issues with it via my EVO 4G.  However, I did not try the video playback functionality.

If you are interested in taking it for a spin, follow the link below to the official thread over at XDA Developers.

That is very interesting how AT&T expanded only to Android phones on their plans. It is not like different carriers are going to make a difference in how they access their DVR. Also, the U-Verse app is very limited in the amount of features it has. As a customer and employee of DISH Network, I have been using the DISH Remote Access app for a long time and it is one of the best apps that I have used on my Evo 4G. Similar to the AT&T app, I can control my DVR contents and look at the guide, but unlike their app, I can stream live TV and recorded shows from my 922 SlingLoaded receiver anywhere I am. It is awesome because I will never have to worry about missing any of my favorite shows. I definitely suggest checking out dish.com to get all the facts on taking your TV with you wherever you go! TV is just so much better when you can take it with you!

You probably should have tried the playback functionality, because the AT&T app crashes on the HTC EVO when trying to playback a recording from your DVR. Tested on two different EVOs, and others comment the same. Typical of AT&T technology, released when it's partly finished.
