Free App Friday - 6/17/2011

Here we are again at the end of another work week and what better way to kick off the weekend than looking at a few of the great free apps that are available from the Market.  This week, we've got everything from photography to groceries, and even a little app that makes every hour happy hour.  Skip on past the break to explore this week's Free App Friday.

Little Photo

Little Photo is a great little camera app that contains a number of cool and stylish effects that you can apply after snapping a shot.  Effects can be combined to create the exact style you're looking for.  Effects can also be applied to existing photos you already have on your SD card.  The actual camera portion of the app isn't quite as full featured as the native camera app found on most phones, but it gets the job done.  Overall, the app packs a lot of punch for being free.

 Vplayer Pro

There are a plethora of video players on the market, but few free ones that offer support for as many formats as Vplayer Pro.  It played pretty much everything I threw at it, including a couple of Real Player formats.  It did choke up on a .WMV file, but to be fair, it's a relatively high-bandwidth file that I have yet to find a player that can decode it.  This free player also doesn't place annoying watermarks on the screen.  You might want to bear in mind that any video player is only going to be as good as the processor in your phone allows it to be.  If you play a lot of downloaded video, give this player a shot and see what you think.

OurGroceries

OurGroceries automatically keeps your family’s grocery list in sync with the latest changes—on every family member’s phone or web browser.  Every change to your shared shopping list is visible in seconds. See items being checked off as your partner shops!

iPhone, BlackBerry, and web versions also available.

I've actually been pretty impressed with this app after using a number of different "shopping list" type apps in the past.  Ultimately, this is the one that my wife and I both use on a regular basis to keep track of what we need from the store.  It's easy to use, but still has all the features you would expect from this type of application.

beOrganized Lite

Yep, there's a million and one calendar apps on the Market.  There's also a million and two task/to-do list apps on the market.  beOrganized Lite happens to bring them both together in a very nice looking package.  The main draw to this app is its ease of use, and the aggregating of both tasks and appointments in to one nicely done interface.  It's missing a couple of key features, such as a widget, and a weekly/monthly view.  However, for what it is, it's well done.  It supports integration with your Google calendar, as well as Google tasks.  If you're looking for a simple, easy to use app that brings both together, beOrganizeLite is worth a look.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere

Who says you need to wait until it's 5pm in your local time zone before you can grab a nice cold beverage to kick off the weekend?  With this app, you can quickly find somewhere in the world where it's 5:00 already and use that as your excuse for drinking on the job.  To help you get the party started, there's even a link to help you find a new drink every day.  Now excuse me while I run out and pick up some....um.....supplies.  After all, it's 5pm in Port Louis, Mauritius.
