Ok, I'm going to say this just to get it out of the way: tiered data plans SUCK! There, I said it, we all know it to be true, and hate that carriers seem to be moving in that direction. The latest casualty in this disturbing trend? Verizon.
According to droid-life.com, tiered data plans are coming to Verizon starting July 7th. So what are these plans going to look like? Here's how they break down:
Data plans:
- 2GB – $30/month
- 5GB – $50/month
- 10GB – $80/month
That's just for data to your phone. This doesn't include any tethering options. If you want to use your phone as a hotspot, or tether via USB cable, it's going to cost you an additional $20/month, but you get an extra 2 GB of data. Those plans will look something like this:
- 4GB – $50/month
- 7GB – $70/month
- 12GB – $100/month
The good news is that if you are currently under contract, you don't need to worry about this immediately. At least not until your renewal date comes up. also, according to Droid Life, these plans will be effective for both 3G and 4G.
